A 15 minute video of a car trying to parallel park has become an overnight sensation on YouTube – with over 1,000,000 views at the time of writing. The video shows the hapless driver attempting to reverse a Vauxhall Corsa into a space that is clearly capacious enough for its dimunitive size, but somehow manages to defeat the attempt time after time after time.
While doubtless hilarious if you are so minded, this serves to remind us that several manufacturers have tested self-parking systems in cars and their widespread appearance on the market can’t be far behind. Despite the success of Google’s self-driving car, fully automated driving systems are still a long way from the market but it is worth pausing to think that it isn’t so very long ago that driver-helping aids such as ABS and satnav systems and automatic gearage and ride settings seemed like science fiction. Indeed, if you’re over 30 you probably remember flooding your engine by failing to operate your choke properly – a bit of technology that now seems like the distant past!
Finally, our thoughts are with the poor driver in the video – after all, rare is the driver who has struggled to negotiate a tight parking space!
