Driving can be a difficult, sometimes frightening experience in the winter months, particularly when it snows, but there are some cars that are built to withstand the cold and ice better than others. For those who live in the countryside, the best choice of car is a 4×4 or SUV, both of which can plough their way through just about anything, but it is worth noting that although these vehicles enable you to move in snow, they are unable to help you any further with cornering or braking.
If you don’t wish to invest in an SUV or 4×4, but you still want to be prepared for the snow, you have two further options. The first is to invest in some winter tyres – these will take affect at temperatures lower than 7 degrees. The second is to opt for a car which contains front-wheel drive all-wheel drive (AWD) or front-wheel drive (FWD).
Check out Trusted Dealers’ picks below for some of the best cars currently on the market to tackle the ice and now.
Audi Allroad: Prices from £19,750 used
The Audi Allroad is an adaptation of the Audi A4 Avant station wagon with a higher 7.1-inch ground clearance and more-rugged pretentions. Choose the 2.0 litre 4 cylinder engine and you’ll benefit from 220hp using Audi’s acclaimed AWD ‘Quattro’ system. This model actually handles better over both wet and dry pavement than a small SUV would, and it has the added benefit of heated outside mirrors, headlamp washers and rain-sensing windscreen wipers. Heated seats come as an optional extra.
The Mini Countryman is arguably the most practical model in Mini’s expansive line up. Choose the ALL4S version of the Countryman subcompact four-door wagon which comes with a sprightly 181-horsepower four-cylinder engine and all-wheel-drive to gain added traction on wet or snowy roads and a generous 5.9-inch ground clearance. The Countryman rides on run-flat tires that tend to be not as capable as conventional all-season rubber tyres, but they do have the advantage of preventing a burst tyre in the middle of winter. Heated front seats and headlamp washers are optional extras on this model.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class: Prices from £5,650 used
The newly refreshed Mercedes-Benz E-Class includes a 4Matic AWD model with a choice of a V6 or a V8 engine. Ground clearance ranges from 5.5 to 5.8 inches depending on which engine you choose and the E63 AMG 4Matic model can offer a huge 577hp from its V8 engine, which will more than likely be of huge benefit of driving in snow! The vehicle also offers a unique rear-facing third row jump seat for children. Additional equipment includes heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel and heated side mirrors.
