Best used family carsBack

Most of us will need to invest in a family sized car at some point in our lives, which might mean selling up the car of your dreams in exchange for something that little bit more practical.

But buying a family car needn’t fill you with dread – there are currently a wide selection of excellent used family cars that are designed to not only see you and your family get safely from A to B, but are also fun to drive.

Below Trusted Dealers has chosen five of its best used family cars offering all-round, good value for money.

NissanQashqai3Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi (07-)
Priced at £5,500 upwards
The Nissan Qasqai was one of the original Crossover cars introduced to the motoring world for those families seeking a big, bold looking car with a higher seating position. Since its initial launch in 2007, the Qashqai has enjoyed huge success, despite the fact that the car in the main is still a front wheel drive car. What appeals to the masses is the cars stylish looks, its higher seating position, its five star NCAP safety rating, its large boot and its impressive 54mpg fuel economy (on the diesel model). For the four-wheel drive option, choose the 2.0-litre version.

VWGolfEstate1Volkswagen Golf estate (06-)
Priced at £4000 upwards
The Volkswagen Golf estate is a long-standing favourite with those who seek an estate car with a phenomenally large boot capacity. It comes with all the traits you’d expect from a VW – its well made, offers a stylish comfortable interior and plenty of mod cons as standard. To drive, the Golf estate is refined and comfortable and as much fun to drive as the smaller VW Golf hatchback. Like any VW car, resale values on the Golf estate are high so you’ll cash in when you come to sell the car on. It’s also remarkably cheap to own and run.

VauxhallInsigniaVauxhall Insignia (2012-)
Priced at £5,500 upwards
If you are looking for a family car which offers maximum bang for your buck, the Insignia is the perfect choice. Thanks to the family sector’s hunger for spacious, comfortable and cheap-to-run cars, the market is highly competitive, meaning there are plenty of used models available to buy at rock bottom prices. In fact, if you do your homework and haggle hard, you can pick up a one year old model for as much as £14,000 less than its original listing price! Opt for the sporty SRi version and you’ll benefit from 18-inch alloys, parking sensors and an upgraded sound system. We recommend the 138bhp 1.8 petrol variant as our model of choice.

BMW3-seriesTBMW 3-series Touring (05-)
Priced at £5,500 upwards
If you fancy a bit of luxury, look no further than a BMW 3-series Touring. This is one of the most popular family cars on the market thanks to its highly desirable looks, excellent performance and drive capability coupled with its remarkable practicality. BMW have built an estate which ticks almost every box – if you want a car that’s fun and enjoyable to drive but will also squeeze your kids and luggage in, this is the car for you. Our only complaint would be the boot capacity which is one of the lowest for a car in this class. Choose the 320d ES model for the best value for money.

SkodaOctaviaSkoda Octavia estate (2008-)
Priced at £3000 upwards
If practicality and value for money are high on your family’s agenda, when it comes to picking the best used family car the Skoda Octavia ticks all the right boxes, offering class leading space coupled with excellent engineering. It shares a similar engine make-up as the VW Golf Estate but the bonus is you can get hold of this car for a lot less of your hard-earned cash! Choose the diesel engine and you’ll benefit from a punchy yet frugal engine. The Octavia estate is economic , comfortable and durable and you can pick a used one up for an excellent price.
