Car manufacturing supersedes one million unitsBack

smmt logoThe Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have released the latest results for new car sales last month.

New cars sales in September have driven 2013 UK car production up to 1,125,433 units which is an increase of 3.9 per cent on 2012. In reaction to the increased demand, 140,888 cars were built in September which is a high 9.9 per cent ahead of the amount produced in the same month of 2012.

These results contribute to the rolling 12-month output reaching 1.5 million for the first time since October 2008, and shows that the new car market is buoyant with exports rising 9.3 per cent in the month.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive said: “Boosted by strong domestic demand, September’s 9.9% rise in car manufacturing reinforces how the sector is one of the UK’s biggest success stories of recent years.

“This year alone, more than £2.6 billion has been committed across the UK automotive sector, from the supply chain to global car manufacturing brands. This long-term financial commitment and robust demand for UK-built products demonstrate the global appetite for high-quality, desirable products borne of the UK’s world-class design, R&D and engineering.”
