E-Car, the UK’s first electric car club unveiledBack

ElectricNewsThe UK’s first pay-per-use electric car club launched today.

The E-Car Club was officially opened at the University of Hertfordshire with several Renault electric vehicles available, in partnership with Source East and University of Hertfordshire.

The E-Car Club is one of the first schemes aiming to improve mobility on a local level, whilst at the same time it aims to reduce the cost of transport and improve the environmental impact on every journey taken.

The purpose of the new E-Car Club is to provide staff, students and members of the local community with the convenience and the flexibility of full-sized electric cars, without the costs associated with actually owning an electric vehicle (EV).

Initially, the scheme will offer three 100 per cent electric Renault cars, two ZOE superminis and a Fluence Z.E. saloon, which will be available for people to hire by the hour. Each vehicle has its own designated parking space and an electric charging point at the de Havilland and College Lane Campus provided by Source East. The range of the Renault Zoe when fully charged is approximately, making it a perfect choice for regional trips.

Anyone can become a member of the University of Hertfordshire E-Car Club and hire an E-Car for just £5.50 per hour. Members can book the vehicle by phone or online and the E-Car can be reserved for as little as one hour, or as much as several days. Each member is provided with a smart card and secure code with which to access the electric car.

It is hoped that the new scheme will provide a low cost, low carbon and minimum hassle alternative to using your own car for a local journey. If you choose to hire a car from E-Car, they guarantee to take care of everything to include insurance, maintenance, cleaning and tax.

Transport Minister, Baroness Kramer, said: It’s inspiring to see a business like E-Car Club, which was only set up a couple of years ago, doing so much to promote ultra-low emission vehicles… E-Car Club is a scheme that kills three birds with one stone – congestion, cost and carbon.”

Lifetime E-Car Membership is on offer for just £30 for those joining before 28th February using the following promotional code: ‘PRESSECAR114’. For more information, visit http://www.e-carclub.org.
