A survey conducted by Brake and Allianz Insurance shows that eight out of ten people (78%) think that a 20mph speed limit should be put in place around schools, on residential stress and in village, town and city centres.
The update comes in conjunction with Brake taking their latest campaign, GO 20 for safe, active, happy communities to parliament. The charity is calling on politicians to support the introduction of 20mph as the default urban speed limit.
Further results from the survey revealed that seven out of ten people (72%) of people felt that roads in their town or village needed to be made safer for walking and cycling. Eight out of ten people (81%) felt that traffic levels were too fast on some (51%) or most (30%) of their local roads, and eight out of ten people thought it would encourage more people to walk or cycle if roads and routes in their town or village were made safer.
Speakers at the Brake and Allianz Insurance GO 20 parliamentary reception today will discuss the benefits of 20mph limits and the progress being made by local authorities in implementing them. Speakers include road safety minister Robert Goodwill MP and bereaved dad Dave Britt, speaking about how a 20mph speed limit could have saved his son’s life.
Today, there is already an estimated 12.5 million people in the UK living in areas implementing or committed to widespread 20mph limits. Brake argues that the country is reaching the point where a national change would be of great benefit to communities across Britain.
Areas which have already implemented 20mph speed limits have seen significant reductions in road casualties such as Portsmouth where incidents have fallen by 22 per cent and Camden where crashes have reduced by as much as 54 per cent. Other high profile local authorities now GOing 20 include the City of London, Birmingham, Newcastle and Edinburgh.
20mph limits also promise to deliver improvements in public health and social activity, and reductions in congestion, pollution and noise, as more people feel safe to walk and cycle for local journeys, commuting or simply for enjoyment.

We need to tackle the senseless and violent casualties that continue to happen daily on our roads, and we need to enable people to live healthy, active, social lives. It’s clear that 20mph limits in communities can help bring this about – and it’s clear this is what people want.
