The Vauxhall Corsa is one of the UK’s most popular superminis and the newest model set to hit the forecourts next year proves to be no exception. The new Vauxhall Corsa is available with a huge range of engines and specifications so you can personalise it to the max, and it’s even smarter inside.
There is a large range of engines available with the new Corsa to include an entry-level 89bhp 1.0-litre turbo petrol which also comes with 118bhp. This is definitely worth considering as it feels stronger than you’d expect. There are also 1.2 and 1.4-litre petrol engines and a turbo-charged 1.4 engine which performs much better on the motorway along with the diesels engines which all offer excellent fuel economy and are as frugal as most rivals. In fact, only the automatic 1.4-litre petrol has poor fuel credentials.
The interior dimensions of the new Corsa remain the same so you’ll be able to fit four people in the cabin quite comfortably, although space in the back is slightly limited for taller passengers. Access to the back is easy in the five-door model and there’s plenty of useful storage spaces dotted about the cabin. The boot is also a decent size and will house a large suitcase or a week’s shopping quite easily, although larger buggies might prove to be a squash to get in, but you can fold down one of the side rear seats to increase load space.
The ride can feel a little unsettled at times but overall, the Corsa is enjoyable to drive. It deals with lumps and bumps in the road with ease and is generally a comfortable car to be in. The steering is light at low speed and there is great all-round visibility which helps with manoeuvres. The Corsa remains composed on corners and UK cars receive a bespoke steering set-up which helps with response. Refinement is okay, with some wind and road noise apparent at motorway speeds but nothing that is overly intrusive. Choose the 1.0-litre turbo petrol for the smoothest ride.
The cheapest version of the Corsa is the Sting, which comes with alloy wheels, Bluetooth and an iPod connection socket. Upgrade to the Excite spec and you’ll benefit from air-conditioning, a digital radio and Corsa’s own IntelliLink touchscreen entertainment system. The Design spec swaps alloy wheels for cruise control and a wider range of engines, including the impressive 89bhp 1.0-litre turbo petrol and there’s a sporty looking SRi model, the even sportier looking SRi VX-Line, and the range-topping Limited Edition.
The latest Vauxhall Corsa hasn’t been crash tested by the independent assessors at Euro NCAP, but its predecessor achieved the maximum five-star rating. Standard safety equipment is excellent and includes six airbags and an electronic stability control system.
Should I buy one?
The basic model is cheaper than the Corsa’s main rival, the Ford Fiesta and it looks just as classy too. But resale values are not as strong as the Fiesta so larger discounts are offered to compensate. Running costs are also affordable whilst fuel economy and CO2 emissions are equally competitive to rivals . If you’re looking for an affordable supermini which is fun to drive, its definitely a good option.
