If you are a parent then buying a car which offers a high amount of safety features is more than likely a high priority. Luckily, most of the latest cars to hit the production line do contain a wide variety of safety equipment, so it’s difficult to know which model is the best to pick.
This is where Euro NCAP comes in. Euro NCAP is the official site of the European car assessment programme and can therefore provide consumers with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold throughout the UK and Europe. So, if you want to know the safety performance of your current or future car, this is the place to look.
This year, Euro NCAP has revealed the top five safest cars for 2011 which we have listed below, so if you’re thinking about purchasing a new or used family car, you might want to consider these options in your quest!
The 5-series came top for safety in the executive class and it’s not hard to see why. BMW prides itself on an extensive selection of safety features and all 5-series cars come with a minimum of six airbags and a host of electronic driver aids to include stability control and a system that primes the safety kit if a crash looks inevitable. Deadlocks, locking wheelnuts and an alarm are also on hand to ward off thieves.
Alfa Romeo Giuletta
The Alfa Romeo Giuletta is currently the safest small family car to drive, in fact, it was actually awarded one of the best ever scores in the Euro NCAP testing. It offers stability control coupled with front, side and curtain airbags as well as anti-whiplash front head restraints which are fitted on all models as standard. Lusso models and above are also fitted with an alarm and there are deadlocks and marked parts on every car for added security.
The safest supermini around is the popular Honda CR-Z which offers a full array of safety kit to include front, side and curtain airbags and active front head restraints designed to reduce whiplash injuries. There is also a full selection of electronics to include stability control, to minimise the effect of impact in an accident.
The Kia Sportage came top of the class for being the safest off-road 4×4 on the road and it offers a full selection of safety kit to include front, side and curtain airbags as well as active head restraints. The Sportage also contains Isofix child-seat fittings, stability control and a hill-start mechanism. Deadlocks, an alarm and locking wheel nuts are included to help deter thieves.
The Toyota Verso was named the safest small MPV of 2011 and it contains just about every piece of safety and security kit imaginable, to include stability control, hill-start assist, active front-seat head restraints, a driver’s knee airbag and cabin-length window airbags to accompany the usual front and side airbags. To ward off thieves, there is also a deadlock with an alarm and marked parts.
