A Freedom of Information request issued by the Institute of Advanced Motorists has unearthed a startling statistic. Over 17,000 people have been issued with fixed penalty notices for careless driving since police were given this power on 16th August 2013.
Essex stood at the top of the 33 police forces that responded to the request, with 3,630 convictions between August 2013 and August 2015. Humberside came in second with a much lower 1,998.
The majority of drivers who received a fixed penalty notice chose undertake a course. Others elected to with accept a conditional offer or go to court.
Neil Addley, Managing Director of Trusted Dealers says “Whilst it would be easy to adopt a ‘holier than thou’ attitude, it must be true that aggressive driving, unpredictable lane-changing and tail-gating result in avoidable accidents. If this results in just one less fatality, it has to be for the greater good”.
