Euro NCAP announces safest cars 2012Back

Euro NCAP has today announced its top choices for the safest cars on the road.

Euro NCAP is the official site of the European car assessment programme and it exists to provide consumers with a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular cars sold throughout the UK and Europe. So, if you want to know the safety performance of your current or future car, this is the place to look.

This year, Euro NCAP has revealed that six of the safest cars for 2012 received a five-star rating and performed highly in each of the four individual marking categories – adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist systems.

The best cars for 2012 recommended by Euro NCAP for their outstanding safety performance are listed below:

  • Renault Clio – Supermini
  • Volvo V40 – Small Family
  • Ford B-MAX & Fiat 500L – Small MPV
  • Ford Kuga – Small Off-Road 4×4
  • Hyundai Santa Fe – Large Off-Road 4×4
  • BMW 3-Series – Large Family
  • Ford Transit – Business/Family van

The Fiat 500L and the Ford B-MAX jointly share the title for the safest small MPV car whilst the Volvo V40 reached the highest combined score of any car previously tested by Euro NCAP. Twenty-six cars received the highest star rating of five stars, with one model achieving 4 stars and 8 receiving just 3 stars.

Runners up for the 2012 accolade include the Ford Fiesta in the Supermini category and the Opel Mokka in the Small Family category, the Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid in the Large Family category; the Subaru Forester in the Small Off-Road 4×4 category, and the Range Rover in the Large Off-Road 4×4.

Euro NCAP released comparative results for the very first time in the popular Business and Family van category, where the Ford Transit van received the highest score of five stars overall. It is the first time that a van has achieved the five-star rating as well as the best in class honour. Runners up in this category included the Fiat Scudo along with its twins, the Citroen Jumpy and the Peugeot Expert, all of which received just three stars.
