Volkswagen’s latest new city car has just been named ‘Small Car of the Year’ by one of the UK’s most popular motoring publications, TopGear magazine.
The Volkswagen up! was voted for by staff of the magazine as well as the BBC’s popular Top Gear show, with Top Gear judges describing the up! as “the cleverest small car around today, the city car we know VW was capable of producing, the distilled essence of Volkswagen.”
The Volkswagen up! is an all-new city car which is designed to offer its customers maximum space coupled with excellent fuel economy and low CO2 emissions. The up! contains all the core values of VW which is why it is predicted to be a very successful and popular city car.
The Volkswagen up! is set to launch next month and prices will start at £7,995 for the entry level model Take up!, which sports a 1.0-litre petrol engine with 60bhp. There will also be a 1.0-litre petrol engine available with 70bhp as well as a BlueMotion model which offers combined fuel consumption as high as 100mpg and CO2 emissions which are less than 100g/km, making it an incredibly economical car.
The Volkswagen up! is one of the smallest four-seater city cars on the market, competing with other popular city cars such as the Vauxhall Agila and the Ford Ka. Because of the long wheelbase offered in the up! the car is able to maximise its cabin and boot space, and therefore offers one of the largest boots in its class at 251 litres. You can also fully fold down the rear seats to maximise cargo space to 951 litres.
Commenting on the award, Director of Volkswagen, Chris Craft said: “This is a brilliant award with which to begin the up!’s trophy tally, and we hope the TopGear accolade will be the first of many.
“The up! is a hugely important car for Volkswagen which will appeal to a wide range of customers. Technological innovations, value for money and the highest quality standards make this – as the TopGearjudges have said – a genuine small Volkswagen rather than just another small car.”
Retailers in the UK began taking orders for the all-new up! at the start of October and the first deliveries will be in March 2012. Visit the Volkswagen website for further details and pricing information on the Volkswagen up!
