What Car? Car of the Year 2013 Announced – the Audi A3 SportbackBack

In a year of notable new product launches – among them the latest iteration of the BMW 3 series and the 7th generation VW Golf – the new Audi A3 sportback was for some a surprising choice for the What Car? car of the year 2013.

There’s no doubt that it’s a great car – keenly priced, exceedingly competent, tidily packaged and put together with Audi’s traditional fastidious attention to detail – but it is also a muted update of car which hasn’t exactly set the world aflame with excitement.

As an all-rounder it is a hard car to beat, but in most cases awards go to cars with more immediate impact – game-changers such as the Rover SD-1 or original Volkswagen Golf. That said, it is worth remembering that What Car? champions the consumer, rather than pandering to petrol heads, and in that context the A3 is an exceedingly good car to buy.

Nonetheless, congratulations to Audi and the team at What Car? for their choice!

We’d love to hear your views on your own personal car of the year!
