The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has announced that from Monday 28 November 2016, driving licences issued to drivers who need adapted vehicles will show new codes.

The new codes will be added alongside existing codes, on the back of the photo card driving licence.

Three new codes replace ‘Code 30 – modified combined braking and accelerator systems’:

  • Code 31 – pedal adaptations and pedal safeguards.
  • Code 32 – combined service brake and accelerator systems.
  • Code 33 – combined service brake, accelerator and steering systems.

Two new sub-codes to ‘Code 44 – modifications to motorbikes’:

  • Code 44.11 – adapted foot rest.
  • Code 44.12 – adapted hand grip.

You may still see some licences showing code 30 – they can only be updated and a new licence issued when:

  • DVLA is advised of a change in the driver’s medical condition
  • a driver renews their licence.
