Lower fares for flights helped to push the rate of inflation down to its lowest level in four-and-a-half years in May.
The Consumer Prices Index fell to 1.5% in May compared with 1.8% in April, according to the Office for National Statistics.
It is the sixth consecutive month that inflation has been below the Bank of England’s 2% target.
A fall in food prices also helped drive down the rate of inflation.
The ONS said the price of food and non-alcoholic beverages fell by 0.6% year-on-year in May, the sharpest fall in a decade.
“Crash for cash” car insurance scams rose by 51% last year, according to one of the UK’s biggest motor insurers.
Aviva, which insures one in 10 of the cars in the UK, detected about 820 “induced accidents” in 2013.
These faked accidents led to around 2,200 fraudulent claims for personal injury, according to Aviva.
It is calling for harsher sentences for the fraudsters, complaining that the most common punishment is a community order.
Typically, the accidents are caused deliberately by gangs who put in claims for whiplash compensation.
Ford has lowered fuel economy ratings for six of its vehicles, mostly hybrids, and will reimburse about 215,000 customers after the automaker applied test data incorrectly. This is the second time in the last year Ford has had to lower mileage figures on some models, and is a setback to its reputation as a leader in fuel economy. The Environmental Protection Agency has given Ford 15 days to correct its labels. Ford has told dealers that new fuel economy labels will be available in approximately six days and they may continue selling the vehicles until the new labels are received.

Companies hoping to claw back tax paid for employees that drive their own cars on business have been questioned by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
The Revenue sent a detailed questionnaire to the claimants so it can “undertake a full review” and make a decision as to whether or not a repayment is due.
The developments are the latest twist in the much-publicised Total People (subsequently known as Cheshire Employer and Skills Development) case, which culminated in a victory for the taxpayer in the Court of Appeal 18 months ago (Fleet News, November 1, 2012).
That company’s seven-year legal battle related to a National Insurance refund claim based on the difference between HMRC’s AMAP rate of 40p per mile (now 45p) and the 12ppm paid by the employer plus an additional lump sum paid to the employees for using their own cars on business.
