General Data Protection Regulation to apply from May 2018Back

MILSLogo2The General Data Protection Regulation (GPDR) is a new Regulation by which the European Commission intends to strengthen and unify data protection for individuals within the European Union.

We can report that the GDPR will replace the current Data Protection Directive (95/46/EC) and will apply in all member states from 25 May 2018, two years from its entry into force on 24 May 2016.

We are bringing this to the attention of members now because businesses have a fixed deadline (May 2018) for mandatory compliance with the GDPR. In due course, preparation will need to be underway for its application, particularly in the light of hugely increased monetary penalties for breaches and other new requirements.

Once we have had a detailed opportunity to study the impact and requirements of the new data protection regime, we will report further on the necessary steps which businesses will need to plan for and take before May 2018.
