Growth revives pre-crisis hopes – The economy grew by a robust 0.8 per cent in the first three months of the year, raising hopes that gross domestic product will overtake its pre-crisis peak this summer. Compared with the same quarter last year, GDP was 3.1 per cent higher – the fastest rate of growth since the fourth quarter of 2007.

Industry warns on skills shortage as 1m jobs loom – Manufacturing will require almost 1m more workers by 2020 to replace those retiring or leaving, but the quality and quantity of graduates is failing to match industry needs, a report has said. The EEF manufacturers’ organisation said demand for skilled staff was rising, with two-thirds of companies planning to recruit engineering graduates over the next three years.

Google accelerates on road to driverless car – Google has announced a breakthrough in developing driverless cars that can cope with city traffic. The internet company’s cars have already covered hundreds of thousands of miles on California’s roads without crashing, but developers have struggled with the volume of situations and obstacles that drivers meet in urban areas.

Call to tax ‘deadly’ diesel – Diesel should be taxed at a higher rate than petrol and older diesel cars should be banned from cities to help to prevent thousands of premature deaths, a government adviser on air pollution has said.
