NADAStaff turnover is a major issue for dealerships and is rising in the US.

Millennials already make up 31% of employees in new car dealerships and are 48% of all new employees, mainly in sales consultant and service technician roles according to the NADA Dealership Workforce Study. By 2025, 75% of the US workforce will be made up of millennials.

Millennials have grown up with technology and are used to immediate access to information and services. Collaboration and consultation are important, millennials tend to appreciate immediate and relevant feedback.

When hiring millennials:

  • Ask job expectations, goals and their definition of growth
  • Communicate clearly the job characteristics
  • Use millennials to recruit others

Encourage a collaborative workplace:

  • Emphasise teamwork and opportunities to work together
  • Introduce mentoring and share decision making
  • Ensure open communication and avoid confrontation

To encourage and engage millennials:

  • Provide frequent learning opportunities
  • Offer job shadowing opportunities and vary job tasks

In the work environment:

  • Provide some flexibility in their schedule
  • Reward innovation
  • Allow opportunities for some job opportunities
