BMW is a top class car brand - one of the holy trinity of German executive car makers (the others being Mercedes-Benz and Audi). They are widely recognised for their range of outstanding cars, demonstrating high performance and specification. BMW's devotion to the driving experience means that most of their cars are front-engined and rear-wheel drive - which ostensibly gives the perfect weight distribution to minimise oversteer and understeer. In recent years, they have ventured a little way away from the classic conservatism of their 70s and 80s cars and their appearance has become a little more outre as a result.
The BMW 1 Series was launched in 2004, and this model has since become one of the most popular small hatchbacks around. The 1 Series is BMW's smallest model and comes in a variety of specifications including a Hatchback, Coupe or Convertible.
The BMW 3-series is a compact executive car highly popular with business people who are constantly on the move and require a car that is fast, comfortable and reliable. The 3-series is now in its fifth generation, so if you prefer a second-hand BMW, there are plenty of models to choose from.
For a larger executive car, choose the BMW 5-series, offered as a four-door Saloon or five-door Touring Estate. Or for something larger and even more luxurious, the BMW 7-series competes with the Audi A8, Jaguar XJ and Mercedes S-Class, and you can choose from several different specifications depending on the size of your budget.
If you're looking for an off-roader, the BMW X3 was introduced in 2003, and is offered as BMW's first crossover Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). The X3 has the additional benefit of an all-wheel drive capability however, if its not big enough for your requirements, there is also the BMW X5 which is the mid-sized luxury SAV.
If size is not an issue or your budget, why not go for the BMW Z4? Unlike its predecessor, the latest Z4 Convertible comes with a folding hard-top roof and there are plenty of four and six cylinder engines on offer to make the ride as fast, loud and furious as you dare.
