The 2 Series is a two-door compact executive car produced by German manufacturer BMW since the end of 2013. The 2 Series officially launched at the 2014 North American International Auto Show as a successor to the 1 Series coupe. While it shares a platform with the current rear-wheel-drive 1 Series hatchback, the 2 Series has a slightly stretched body and longer wheelbase to help with stability, particularly noticeable on open roads. The handling and agility offered by the rear-wheel-drive chassis is arguably what sets the 2 Series apart from its market rivals, which includes models like the Audi TT, Toyota GT86 and Volkswagen Scirocco.

In terms of engines the 2 Series offers a range of petrol and diesel units borrowed from the 1 Series hatchback. The turbocharged petrol engines comprise a 134bhp 1.5-litre three-cylinder unit, a 2.0-litre four-cylinder available in 181bhp and 241bhp power outputs, and a fiery 322bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder unit. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engines are available in 141bhp, 188bhp and 215bhp power outputs, the middle of which is expected to be the most popular amongst company car drivers due to its optimal balance of performance and efficiency. This unit covers 0-62mph in 7.2 seconds and claims economy of 58.9mpg with manual or 64.2mpg with automatic gearboxes, all while keeping CO2 emissions under 119g/km.

Five trim levels and optional accessory packs allow the 2 Series to be configured to suit requirements. Standard kit across the range is competitive, with base SE trim models featuring 17-inch alloy wheels, 6.5-inch infotainment system, USB connectivity, Bluetooth, DAB radio, Drive Performance Control, air-conditioning and rear parking sensors. Lots of safety equipment stands the 2 Series in good stead to receive an excellent Euro NCAP crash rating when tested, and the 390-litre boot capacity makes it a practical choice of car too.

The efficient engine line-up and high-quality interior of the BMW 2 Series ensure a great overall driving experience. The rear-wheel drive chassis of the 2 Series guarantees fantastic handling, and really sets it apart from the competition.
