Hitting the market in 2014, the 4 Series is a compact executive coupe produced by German manufacturer BMW. Originally unveiled at the 2013 North American International Auto Show, the 4 Series was released as a replacement for the out-going 3 Series coupe, and marked the beginning of BMW's new model naming structure. The 4 Series exhibits a sleeker appearance compared to its 3 Series predecessor, with the frameless door glass and assertive styling increasing the sporty appeal. The 4 Series underwent a subtle mid-cycle facelift in 2017 to keep it fresh amongst its class rivals, which include the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, Audi A5 and Jaguar XE.
At launch, the 4 Series was available with a three-engine and two-gearbox line-up. Though refined diesel engines are a fundamental feature of BMW vehicles, the petrol units available in the 4 Series are more economical than you might expect. These are the 242bhp 2.0-litre 428i and 302bhp 3.0-litre 435i units, which can be mated with BMW's xDrive four-wheel-drive system. The diesel engine on offer is the 181bhp four-cylinder 2.0-litre 420d unit, and is the UK's best-seller. As well as being incredibly economical and returning 61mpg, this diesel can manage the 0-62mph sprint in just 7.3 seconds and has low CO2 emissions of 121g/km.
The four trims available comprise the SE, Sport, Modern and Luxury Line levels, while there is also an optional M Sport package to tailor the 4 Series even further. Standard kit across the range is generous, with the base specification SE trim equipped with air-conditioning, USB connectivity, Bluetooth, 6.5-inch colour screen infotainment system, iDrive Controller, leather upholstery, rear parking sensors, heated front seats, DAB radio plus much more. The 4 Series is a four-seater, with a spacious cabin and substantial leg and head room for all four passengers. On top of this, the 4 Series boasts a 445-litre capacity boot.
The BMW 4 Series is a classy and fantastically equipped compact executive car, and delivers a winning combination of fun powerful engines and stylish design. The 4 Series is sleeker and sportier than ever before, and will appeal to performance and style conscious buyers alike.
