The 5 Series is a mid-size luxury car which has been produced by German manufacturer BMW since 1972. The 5 Series has been an integral part of the BMW range over the decades, and has become a hugely popular choice within its class. It is BMW's second best-selling model, after the 3 Series, and in 2010 accounted for over 50% of the company's profits. The 5 Series is recently in its seventh generation, and over the years has been a regular award winner- it has consistently featured in the What Car? awards, with the latest model already named 2017 Car of the Year. Class rivals include the Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Jaguar XF.
February 2017 saw the UK launch of the new seventh generation model, with four engines on offer: 520d and 530d turbodiesels, as well as 530i and 540i turbo petrols. The range is expected to expand in the near future to include a 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid and several sportier models. The 'modular' family of BMW engines power the 5 Series, meaning that all are fundamentally related regardless of fuel type and cylinder number. All versions come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and are all fitted with turbochargers to enhance performance and increase efficiency.
The latest 5 Series is class-leading when it comes to standard kit on offer. Entry-level models include BMW's top-of-the-range 10.2-inch touchscreen Professional Multimedia system, which has sat-nav, numerous online services, DAB radio, Apple CarPlay and a 20GB hard drive. Other features included as standard are 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone air-conditioning, cruise control, leather upholstery, heated seats, parking sensors, ambient lighting and three-mode drive selector. On top of this is a large 530-litre boot and generous cabin space, making the 5 Series hugely practical and comfortable.
The 5 Series is brilliant to drive, with its refined engines and generous kit making it a comfortable leader within the luxury executive car class. BMW have successfully blended the best in terms of performance, efficiency and driving enjoyment in the 5 Series, and it is well-deserving of its widespread following.
