The first generation 6 Series of luxury cars from German manufacturer BMW was launched in 1976, replacing several outgoing models in the BMW model line-up. After a successful 13 year production span the 6 Series was put to bed, but 2003 marked its revival. The current third generation model debuted at the 2011 Shanghai Auto Show, offered in two-door Coupe, four-door Gran Coupe and hard-top Convertible variants. This two-door Coupe model is the biggest seller however, offering fantastic engines and beautiful styling to rival the likes of the Jaguar F-Type Coupe, Porsche 911 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe.

A mid-production facelift in 2015 saw minor updates to the exterior styling and interior trim of the 6 Series, as well as tweaks to the engine line-up. Latest models have a concise choice of either a 3.0-litre diesel or 4.4-litre twin-turbo petrol engine, both of which utilise BMW's 'Efficient Dynamics' technology to boost fuel economy and keep every day running costs low. Majority of buyers will opt for the smaller capacity diesel unit, dubbed 640d, which with its 309bhp of power will effortlessly propel the 6 Series from 0-62mph in just 5.2 seconds up to the electronically capped top speed of 155mph. This engine is also at the top of its class for efficiency, returning up to a hugely impressive 52.3mpg.

The sleek headlight design and smooth flowing bodywork ensures that the 6 Series really stands out on the road, and it is one of the most understatedly attractive coupes on the market. The interior is expectedly premium too, and the 6 Series can be bought in the entry-level SE, mid-range Sport or top-spec M Sport trim. Even entry-level models are lavishly equipped though, featuring 18-inch alloy wheels, a multimedia sat-nav system, slick eight-speed automatic transmission, leather dashboard, LED headlights, rear park distance control and a class-leading 460-litre capacity boot.

The BMW 6 Series is premium in every aspect of the word and delivers a fantastic overall driving experience. The strong performing engines are impressively efficient too, and the 6 Series is a well-established model with bags of appeal.
