The uniquely styled X6 is a mid-size luxury crossover from German automaker BMW, which caused quite a stir when it first arrived on UK roads in 2009. Marketed as a 'Sports Activity Coupe', the intrinsic design of the X6 blends the all-wheel drive ability and higher road position of an SUV with a sloping coupe-like profile. Until the arrival of the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe in 2015, the first generation X6 had limited direct competition which led to successful sales figures within its first few years of production, particularly in the US. The current second generation X6 debuted at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, and boasts improvements in practically every area.

The standout feature of the X6 has always been its car-like performance on the road. Despite weighing in at over two tonnes, the X6 is surprisingly agile thanks to fantastic grip and limited body roll. The engine range comprises two petrol and two diesel units, the most popular of which is the 254bhp 3.0-litre diesel found in the xDrive30d model. With heaps of pulling power, this unit will propel the X6 from 0-62mph in a sprightly 6.7 seconds. All models come mated to BMW's incredibly smooth eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard. Improvements to the aerodynamics and efficiency of the latest X6 has seen a cut to fuel consumption by up to 22% in certain models, making every day running costs lower than ever before.

The high-quality interior of the X6 is lavishly equipped, with even the most basic entry-level models featuring leather seat trim, sat-nav, heated seats, a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, parking sensors, air-conditioning, Bluetooth, USB connectivity and cruise control as standard. Practicality is also a strong suit in the X6, which exhibits a 580-litre boot space and 3,500kg towing capacity. BMW are renowned for making safe cars, and the X6 is no exception thanks to the extensive on-board safety technology.

BMW have carved out a niche gap in the market with the X6, and its unique styling helps it to stand out amongst more conservative SUVs. The X6 boasts powerful engines and a premium interior packed with generous kit, and is an interesting alternative to mainstream rivals.
