The Ford Ka is a small car which has been manufactured by the Ford Motor Company since 1996. Ford introduced the Ka to its range as a city car, offering drivers a vehicle with small dimensions and low running costs, and exhibiting a radically different design to market rivals. The car was immediately successful, and in its first generation accounted for around a fifth of UK sales within its class. A second generation model was released in 2008, featuring a brand new platform shared with the Fiat 500. 2014 saw the introduction of the third generation Ka, now classed as a subcompact car and facing competition from models like the Volkswagen Up, Skoda Citigo, Citroen and SEAT Mii.
The engine line-up of the Ford Ka comprises two petrol units. The most popular of the pair is the 68bhp 1.2-litre engine, which is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. This claims a 0-62mph sprint time of 13.4 seconds and a top speed of 99mph, delivering a smooth and peppy performance particularly around town, yet still responsive enough to keep up in motorway traffic. The other engine on offer is the 75bhp 1.3-litre TDCi petrol. Both of the engines on offer have low CO2 emissions of under 120g/km, minimising road tax costs, and the 1.3-litre unit is an economical choice delivering combined fuel economy of 67mpg.
The four trim levels available to choose from in the Ka are Studio, Edge, Zetec and Titanium. Base level Studio trim comes equipped with CD stereo, electric power steering, aux-in for iPod/MP3 connectivity and body coloured bumpers as standard. The Ka also comes with a range of optional accessories packs allowing the driver to personalise the car, which include exterior customisation packs in themes such as Tattoo and Grand Prix. The third generation of Ka has also benefitted from a 20% increase in boot capacity from its predecessor, taking it to 224 litres.
The Ford Ka is a nippy and practical subcompact car, featuring distinctive styling and good options for personalisation.
