The RAV4 is an established vehicle in the compact crossover sport utility vehicle (SUV) class. Produced by the Japanese manufacturer Toyota, the RAV4 effectively marked the creation of the compact SUV class and was launched on the European market after its debut in 1994. This class of vehicle appeals to drivers wishing to combine most benefits of an SUV, notably higher road position and optional four-wheel drive, with the fuel economy and manoeuvrability of a standard compact car. Now in its fourth generation, the RAV4 is a popular choice amongst prominent competition from the likes of the Volkswagen Tiguan, Ford Kuga and Honda CR-V.
Over its four generations of production the RAV4 has offered a range of petrol, diesel and hybrid engines. In the latest generation RAV4, the sole petrol is the 149bhp 2.0-litre engine, mated to a CVT automatic gearbox and available in all-wheel drive as standard. Older generation RAV4 models featured a 2.2-litre D-4D engine, which has since been dropped to leave a single 2.0-litre model in the range. This 2.0-litre diesel delivers power of 122bhp and is mated to a manual six-speed gearbox in front-wheel drive, while the older 148bhp 2.2-litre diesel is available in four-wheel drive. The most economical engine is the 2.0-litre diesel unit, returning 60.1mpg and low CO2 emissions of 123g/km.
The three trim levels available are Active, Icon and Invincible, and the choice of two optional accessories packs gives even further scope to tailor the RAV4 to personal requirements. Base level Active trim comes well-equipped as standard, featuring 17-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, all-round electric windows and Isofix child seat anchor points. On top of this is an extensive range of safety features on all models. The RAV4 shines when it comes to practicality too, with the generous cabin space allowing five passengers to sit comfortably and also boasts a competitive 547-litre capacity boot.
The RAV4 is a competitively priced and well-equipped compact SUV, which stands out from the crowd in terms of space and practicality.
