The Verso is a five-door compact multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) produced by Japanese manufacturer Toyota. Unveiled at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, the Verso was released as the successor to the outgoing Corolla Verso, and currently sits below the Verso-S in Toyota's model line-up. 2012 saw the Verso undergo a mid-production facelift to keep it competitive within its class, and incorporated a range of style updates and a revision to the engine range. This has ensured the appeal of the Verso has remained fresh against rivals, which include the Vauxhall Zafira, Ford C-MAX, Peugeot 5008 and Volkswagen Touran.

Current versions of the Verso are available in five- or seven-seat configurations and come with a choice of three engines. The petrol line-up comprises 130bhp 1.6-litre and 145bhp 1.8-litre units, the former of which is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox as standard while the higher powered unit comes only with CVT automatic transmission. The latest addition to the engine line-up is the BMW-built 1.6-litre D4-D turbocharged diesel, which arrived in early 2014 to replace the 2.0-litre unit. Several tweaks to this engine have improved overall response, performance and emissions figures, making it the cleanest and most economical of the range- Toyota claim official returns of 62.8mpg and CO2 emissions of just 119g/km.

As well as a good range of efficient engines, the Verso also boasts excellent levels of equipment and several optional accessories packs. The trim levels were revised in 2014 to now comprise Active, Icon, Trend and Excel- the entry-level Active models come with a choice of five or seven seats, while all higher specification Verso's are seven-seater only. All models boast Toyota's 'Easy Flat' system to enhance flexibility of the interior, with a total of 32 configurations possible. The Verso also performs particularly highly when it comes to safety- in fact, according to Euro NCAP's test results the Verso was the safest MPV on the market from 2010.

The Toyota Verso is a highly flexible compact MPV, offering low every day running costs and unbeatable safety credentials. Though a little dated against its rivals, the Verso still remains a practical and reliable family option.
