The Vauxhall Astra GTC is a three-door sports coupe and is the third incarnation of the Astra model, alongside the five-door and Sports Tourer versions. Originally released in July at the 2011 Paris Motor Show, the GTC today retains most of its concept car looks, with a much sportier exterior and sculpted chassis compared to its five-door counterpart. Competition includes models such as the Volkswagen Scirocco, Renault Megane coupe and Audi A3 hatchback, but the GTC stands out from its rivals thanks to its powerful driving dynamics and sharpened image. On top of this, Vauxhall has spent time tailoring the GTC to specifically suit UK roads, which has noticeably enhanced the overall driving experience.

The GTC boasts an impressive six unit range of petrol and diesel engines, which span from the entry-level 109bhp 1.7-litre diesel to the rapid range-topping 178bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol. The engines are economical and efficient, keeping running costs of the GTC low. All units bar the most powerful petrol are equipped with stop/start technology, which further enhances the efficiency. The best blend of efficiency and performance comes with the 2.0-litre CDTi diesel unit- combined fuel economy figures come in at 57.6mpg and CO2 emissions of 129g/km.

The GTC comes with a range of sporty trims, and as such does not feature some of the basic trim levels found in the Astra hatchback. This makes the equipment levels generous as standard, with base level Sport trim featuring 18-inch alloy wheels, USB and aux-in connectivity, six speaker audio system, DAB radio, air-conditioning, electric front windows and steering wheel-mounted controls. The high level of safety kit across the board has also merited the GTC with a maximum five-star Euro NCAP crash rating, and the 380-litre boot capacity is larger than most direct rivals.

The GTC offers a strong combination of performance, efficiency and practicality, and its distinctive sporty styling makes it a popular choice amongst others in its class.
