Popular and practical, the Crafter is the largest model in the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles line-up. The Crafter launched in 2006 as a replacement to the outgoing LT model, the second generation of which sold around 350,000 units over the nine years before it was retired. Sitting above the Caddy and Transporter in the model line-up, the Crafter features similar styling and a shared engine range with other models in the Volkswagen family, and offers unparalleled levels of practicality thanks to the range of wheelbases and roof heights. Competition for the Crafter includes models such as the Ford Transit, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Citroen Relay.
The 2011 updated version of the latest Crafter features a range of efficient Euro-6 compliant diesel engines, based around a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit. These new powertrains have boosted the payload of the Crafter by up to 10% on certain configurations. The diesel engines are designed for efficiency, durability and low end pulling power, and include 102bhp and 140bhp single-turbo units, and a high-powered 177bhp twin-turbo. Front-wheel drive is currently available, with rear-wheel and four-wheel will join the line-up later in 2017. Engines come mated to a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, with the option of a slick eight-speed automatic. One of the core strengths of the Crafter is its ride quality, which is even and comfortable regardless of load size or road surface.
The hugely versatile Crafter is a strong performer when it comes to practicality, offering three vehicle lengths and three roof heights. This enables the Crafter to receive cargo volumes up to 18.4m3, load heights up to 2,196mm and gross vehicle weights up to 5.5 tonnes. Side access is easy due to the wide 1,311mm sliding doors, and there is an extensive range of load bay options to configure the Crafter to personal requirements, including integrated shelving and racking systems. Cabin equipment levels are excellent as standard across the range, while the fantastic class-leading levels of on-board safety kit is hard to beat.
The Volkswagen Crafter is one of the safest and comfortable vans on the market, while the impressive array of body and interior configurations to choose from also makes it one of the most versatile.
