The Volkswagen Tiguan is a compact crossover utility vehicle (CUV) which has been manufactured since 2007. Sharing the same PQ35 platform of the Golf, the Tiguan combines features of a larger sports utility vehicle (SUV) and those of a smaller passenger vehicle, giving a higher road position and offering a blend of practicality and versatility. The Tiguan is the third best-selling Volkswagen in the UK, and as of 2016 is in its second generation. Crossover vehicles are ever increasing in their popularity, but the Tiguan puts up a strong fight against the likes of the Ford Kuga, Renault Kadjar and the BMW X3.
The Tiguan offers a range of petrol and diesel engines, which kicks off with the 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine available in 123bhp and 148bhp power outputs. The other petrol on offer is the 178bhp 2-litre TSI, made available from summer 2016. Of the diesels the best-seller is the 148bhp 2.0-litre model, badged the 2.0 TDI 150, while the range-topping 240 version rivals performance of the Jaguar F-Pace. This 237bhp 2.0-litre twin-turbo engine gives a top speed of 142mph and a 0-62mph sprint time of just 6.5 seconds. A plug-in hybrid model is expected to be added to the range in due course, promising 149mpg and CO2 emissions as low as 49g/km.
As well as the impressive range of refined engines, the Tiguan also offers five main trim levels to allow configuration to personal requirements. These range from the entry-level S model, through SE, SE Navigation, SEL and onto the top-of-the-range R-Line. The basic S model comes equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, black roof rails, eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system, DAB radio and USB connectivity as standard. The cabin space is bigger than ever before, with plenty of front and rear passenger space as well as a 520-litre boot. With the boot able to increase to 1,655-litre capacity and with a full five-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating, the Tiguan is a safe and practical family vehicle.
The Tiguan is a versatile and spacious CUV, with its impressive engine range offering the best mix of economy and performance.
