The Touran is a large and practical compact multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) produced by German automaker Volkswagen since 2003. The Touran can essentially be thought of as a raised and stretched Golf Plus, and was launched to fill a gap in the Volkswagen range between the smaller Golf and larger Sharan. The Touran has undergone two generations of production, with the latest second generation model introduced at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. Offering a flexible five- or seven-seat interior configuration, the Touran directly rivals other large family vehicles like the Ford Grand C-MAX, Citroen C4 Grand Picasso, Kia Carens and Renault Grand Scenic MPV.

The Touran comes with a five-strong range of engines, comprising two petrol units and three diesels. All engines are four-cylinder turbocharged units, and range in power output from 108bhp to 187bhp. Depending upon the engine, the Touran can be mated to either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox, while all diesels feature BlueMotion Technology to boost efficiency of their performance. The handling and refinement is good across the board, with a 62kg weight reduction between generations helping the Touran's on-road agility, and it is equally comfortable whether driving round town or on the motorway.

The Touran boasts the modern and stylish appearance expected of Volkswagen models, while the interior features huge amounts of space to enhance practicality for large families. The trim levels on offer comprise S, SE, SE Family, SEL and range-topping R-Line, all of which feature a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, DAB radio, Bluetooth, USB connectivity and air-conditioning as standard. The flexible interior seating means that boot capacity ranges from 137 litres with all seven seats in place up to a cavernous 1,857 litres with all five rear seats folded flat. Not only is it practical, the Touran is also safe and has been awarded the maximum five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating.

The Volkswagen styles itself as a perfect family option, and has safely achieved this thanks to its class-leading space and practicality, low running costs and great engines.
